From the Pastor

The implementation of our Vital Church Initiative prescriptions begins in earnest this month. This is a significant process that will bear good fruit for many years to come. It can also be a long process of transition. Many people talk about change but I hope you will look at this as transition over time. Remember, it took Moses 40 years to get from Egypt to Israel. That was a learning process as much as it was a long walk. Through the process, the people of God learned a lot about what it meant for them to be the people of God.

Five things related to VCI begin with the New Year. On January 18 and 28, we offer two workshops on “Practicing Radical Hospitality.” Everyone is invited and urged to participate. We have the “Just Say, Yes!” book groups beginning January 22. On January 20, our church staff will be on a retreat to begin working on their VCI prescriptions. On January 31, we will have the first of three visioning workshops. Everyone is invited to participate in these workshops as well.

On January 21 and 22, Rev. Cathy Townley will be with us to fulfill the prescription related to worship service consultation (Rx 3C). This is the schedule for Cathy’s visit:

Saturday, 2:00 p.m.: a 90-minute driving tour of our mission field

Saturday, 4:00 p.m.:  meeting with all interested persons for questions and answers in            Asbury Hall

Saturday, 5:30 p.m.: dinner with Rev. Bills and Julie Bills

Sunday, 10:30 a.m.:  worship with us

Sunday, 11:45, more time with Cathy for Q & A at the morning brunch after the service

You may find out more about Rev. Cathy Townley by visiting her website at www.townleycoaching.com. You can find her book on Amazon.com, too.

Prescription 3 also references The Reach Network and training for a team that may start an additional worship service at our church. If you are interested in joining this team and taking the training with me, please let me know by emailing (bills@eluumc.org) or calling (517.251.7030).

Our transition time is underway. I wonder what things might look like by this time next year. You know what they say… only time will tell!
